What is TISAX Certification

TISAX is the automotive industry’s recognised information security assessment framework, designed to protect sensitive data exchanged across global automotive supply chains. Based on ISO 27001 with industry-specific requirements, TISAX helps suppliers demonstrate robust information security, meet OEM expectations, strengthen customer trust, and qualify for business with leading automotive manufacturers.

Automotive supply chains generate and exchange some of the most commercially sensitive information in modern manufacturing — vehicle development data, prototype specifications, component designs, and testing results that represent years of investment and significant competitive advantage.
Protecting that information across a supply chain involving hundreds of organisations requires a common, rigorously enforced security standard. TISAX is that standard.
Developed by the German Association of the Automotive Industry and administered through the ENX Association, TISAX applies the VDA Information Security Assessment questionnaire - derived from ISO 27001 with automotive-specific extensions — to evaluate the information security controls of suppliers handling sensitive OEM data.
Unlike conventional security certifications, TISAX results are assessed by ENX-accredited auditors and shared via a controlled exchange portal, enabling one assessment result to be accepted by multiple OEM customers.
For any supplier to BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, or other TISAX-participating OEMs, achieving and maintaining a valid TISAX label is not optional — it is a condition of doing business.

Key Requirements of TISAX Certification

TISAX implementation requires organisations to establish comprehensive information security controls, complete the VDA ISA assessment, address identified gaps, and successfully undergo an ENX-accredited assessment. By meeting these requirements, suppliers demonstrate secure handling of sensitive automotive information and maintain compliance with the security expectations of global automotive manufacturers.

A comprehensive self-assessment completed using the VDA ISA questionnaire, covering all applicable control domains with honest, evidenced responses
Implementation of information security controls across all VDA ISA domains: information security governance, physical and logical access control, asset management, incident management, supplier security, and business continuity
Assessment level selection — AL1, AL2, or AL3 — aligned with the actual sensitivity of OEM information handled, with AL3 applying to the most sensitive prototype and development data
Additional prototype protection controls for suppliers handling physical or digital prototype information, covering photographic protection, inspection access management, and vehicle concealment
High-availability controls for suppliers assessed on connected vehicle data or availability-critical information management
Engagement with an ENX-accredited audit provider for the formal TISAX assessment, conducted at the agreed assessment level
Documented corrective action plans addressing all non-conformities identified during assessment, with evidence of implementation
Maintenance of a valid TISAX label through the ENX portal within the required renewal cycle
